Zen/Chan

Zen/Chan is the essence of living.

Seeing nature of mind is clarity

Chan/Zen is the “brainchild” of Buddhism and Taoism, originating from Ancient China, it directly deals with the nature of mind and essence of life by observing the mind objectively without being burdened by specialized terms and writings, which are unavoidably becoming authority that in reverse affects one learning about oneself.

Here Chan/Zen means the nature of mind and essence of life, without any particular form or expression in words or religion context. Everything is described and pointed out in simple languages; truth is simple, so is language, but it is up to one to come upon it by oneself.

Huineng and Krishnamurti

The center figure of Chan/Zen is Huineng (惠能), who was illiterate but was able to achieve enlightenment by himself, exemplifying the spirit of Chan/Zen, which is to negate everything including the establishment of the tradition and ancestors. This negation is the highest form of the respect for the truth. His work “Platform Sutra” (based on his speech) is most influential on Chinese Chan/Zen history. Its key themes are the direct perception of one’s true nature, and the unity in essence of śīla (conduct), dhyāna (meditation) and prajñā (wisdom). To achieve enlightenment is to get the ultimate clarity about life.

Another figure is Jiddu Krishnamurti, who was able to achieve enlightenment and explain Chan/Zen thoroughly and beautifully in simple English language without touching on any books about Buddhism. He focused on the disclosure of the fallacy and illusion people are trapped in by engaging in the timeless conversation with the public audience, conscientious scholars. Such a confrontation with the western reality has made a tremendous impact on western philosophy.

Huineng and Krishnamurti in their own time demonstrates the pathless path to achieve enlightenment is to observe the mind objectively without relying on any authority; this means, as long as one is serious enough to turn inward independently, negate everything, one will be able to get the ultimate clarity about life, which is the key to all life challenges and human issues.
